Disaccacharides

What are disaccharides?

Disaccharides are sugars with two monosaccharides (single sugars) bonded together. Disaccharides can be natural (sugar cane) or synthentic. In fact, most of the products we buy at the store, that contain sugar, are usually made with disaccharides.

For instance, let’s say we went to the store and bought a package of sugar. We flip it over and read its nutrition label - the only ingredient is sugar. Here, you have to know that the ingredient ”sugar” is just a shorter name for table sugar. and table sugar’s technical name is actually sucrose. Now sucrose is a disaccharide consisting of a glucose and fructose bond.

Let’s also say that we bought a container of milk. Among other ingredients, we see the ingredient lactose. Lactose is a disaccharide consisting of a glucose and galactose bond.

And the list goes on and on. However, an exception to this commonality is dextrose, for it is a monosaccharide commonly used by itself.
